First, it's not recognised as DVD-RW but as DVD-RAM.Searched the web and use regedit to delete upperfilter-lowerfilter and get the 'recoding' tab on drive property by changing CD Burning key to '2'Now the drive is displayed correctly as DVD-RW on windows explorer.But only display CD Drive when blank DVD is inserted.Afterward I tested it fine for playing DVD but cannot burn either DVD or CD by using external software. I notice while trying to burn, the drive pops in and out of windows explorer (my computer) and eventually displayed as unrecognised drive/ local diskF:(?)Uninstall roxio and nero, delete all file and registry that has 'roxio' on.
The system is Windows XP sp3 with automatic update running.The DVD-RW drive is External USB DVD-RW model AD-7701H from Hewlett Packard.Computer is standard Laptop Lenovo z60m, added RAM 1GB.I have exactly the same problem with an internal drive on my HP ZD8398ea laptop, and on swapping the drive for another, I have the same problem. I have 2gb RAM, and I am using Windows XP with SP3 installed. I did wonder if it was down to SP3, but when lookingat the date it was installed, it was prior to when I had problems.Lots of people are having this problem, someone surely must know the answer somewhere. I have tried deleting the upper and lower filters, and many other things, but nothing works.
ALL have the same problem; Apple invented this demented Jedi Mind Game, & now MS is doing it to. I suggest initiating Class Action Lawsuit to FORCE BOTH of them to cease & desist this obstruction of the Legal Use of the Product.

Updated: by Computer Hope Bad or dirty CDMake sure you have tested more than one CD in the disc drive, as it may be one CD that is bad or dirty. If all but one or two discs fail, the disc drive is bad or dirty. Click or double-click the System icon. In Windows XP and earlier, click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button.In Windows Vista and later, click on the Device Manager link on the left side of the System window.Within Device Manager, verify the CD-ROM has no exclamation marks or red X's. If listed with a yellow exclamation mark or red X, remove the CD-ROM by highlighting the drive and pressing the delete key. Reboot the computer to reinstall the CD-ROM drive. NoteIf the CD-ROM drive is not found in the Device Manager, it is likely the drive's cables are not connected properly or that the drive is bad and needs to be replaced.For additional information on Device Manager, see our page. Windows 98 usersIf the above recommendations have been attempted, try booting from a Windows 98 diskette or other bootable diskette with CD-ROM drivers to see if the CD-ROM works from MS-DOS. If the CD-ROM does work from MS-DOS, this indicates that you have a corruption issue with Windows. However, if the CD-ROM does not work, refer to the next and final possibility.
