Gracoil Installation On Browning 725
The GraCoil is a compression butt plate with an adjustable tension setting and adjustable pad plate, made to fit any shooter's style. Tension will adjust from 14 lb. With a maximum stroke of 5/16', producing a response time hardly detected, and no distractions between shots. The pad plate adjust up or down and side to side with plenty of adjustment for comfort. Moving parts slide on teflon liners for a smooth and trouble free motion.
Very little lubrication or maintenance is required. The GraCoil adds 1' to the stock length, and requires the stock to be shortened in most cases. All aluminum and stainless steel construction.
Comes complete with screws and wrenches. The GraCoil LP offers all the same features as the standard GraCoil, but with the added feature of 'length of pull' adjustment, which allows adjustment up tp 1'. The GraCoil Units cannot be installed on the following: remington 1100, 11-87 and Beretta 303.
What is a strategy for setting the tension on a GraCoil - it is adjustable from 14# to 70# - GraCoil came on the BT99 I purchased. At light setting (screwed all the way in), my cheek gets banged up. I am short and had the stock cut so I could get a 13 3/4' pull and did not realize the gun smith had screwed the adjustment all the way in.Half way in worked and am about to try tighter setting with a harder tension. I am looking for ideas on where to try and how to evaluate.I assume the same logic would be used for a Precision Fit. Their manual says 'When tension is correct, if the gun is fired the barrel tip will come straight back with almost no vertical lift.'

Colin Gilboy. Thanks to Rich for the instructions:GRACOIL USE INSTRUCTIONSIt is important for the Gracoil to be adjusted to the shooter, not the load or shell size. When adjusted to the individual, the recoil will activate the Gracoil and it will respond to protect the shooter. Not all shooters mount or hold a gun with the same pressure to the shoulder and face. If the tension is set too light there will be more gun motion than necessary, and it could compress enough to pinch the shooter. When the tension is set too heavy, more recoil is felt.
The tension should be set tight enough that the unit will not completely close, or “bottom out”.Setting the TensionOpen the unit using a 3/32 allen wrench, insert it into the hole on the right side and loosen the set screw 2 turns, then pull the plate off exposing the center shaft. Using the same allen wrench, insert it in the hole in the shaft and turn as the arrow indicates, towards the lightest setting and replace the pad plate.Mount the gun as if you are about to call for a target. If the unit starts to compress, it is set too light, so remove the pad plate again and turn the center shaft 1 turn towards “Heavy”, replace the pad plate and mount the gun. Repeat this process until the unit does not compress. Do not go past this point more than ¼ turn. It is now set on the “breakover edge”, any amount of recoil will activate the Gracoil, giving quick response with a short stroke, and absorbing a greater amount of recoil for a softer shot.Pad Plate AdjustmentThe Gracoil pad plate is guided and runs on 4 teflon liners for smooth motion and lifetime wear, a small amount of oil on the guide pins occasionally will help keep it running smoothly. To adjust the pad plate for the shooter’s comfort, remove the recoil pad using the 3/32 allen wrench, then use the 1/8 allen wrench to loosen the 2 screws holding the cam locks.

Both screws have a series of 6 holes for adjustment, simply move the plate to suit your comfort and retighten.Length of Pull AdjustmentsIf you have a GC15LP Gracoil with length of pull adjustment, use a 7/64 allen wrench to loosen the 2 screws on the right side of the stock plate, then turn the center shaft to your desired stock length and retighten. Colin,I also am of shorter stature and have gotten older (68 years).

On my BT99Golden Clays I have my Gracoil setup to compress about 1/4 inch when I pull itinto my shoulder and pull back really hard. Probably around medium compression.Played with it a lot, light and heavy. This works the best for me.Works with both 2 3/4 and 3 dram loads. Doesn't scape my cheek. I clean and lube the pins with STOS about every 750 to 1000 rounds. Some never clean them and they tend to seize up.I would play with it until you find the setting that is comfortable for you.Mike C. I have installed 100's of Gracoils and other systems and I agree with the comments above about setting it towards the stiffer side. The following comment applies to not only to Gracoils but RAD Systems and other recoil devices: Set your system stiff enough so that its motion stops just before or just as it barely bottoms out.
That way, the system has a chance to dissipate the recoil over its entire stroke and there is very little energy left by the time it stops and rebounds. Setting it too lightly will allow the system to bottom out too quickly and not have enough energy dissapating quality during its stroke. In other words - after it bottoms out you get the rest of the recoil. Even if your system only retracts 3/16' it is dissapating a great deal of recoil during its stroke. An additional benefit to having a stiffer setting is that it will rebound to its original position more quickly - helping you for a steadier second shot. The Gracoil has 7 total turns of adjustment.
I always sent out my installed systems at 4 turns towards the heavier setting and recommended that my customers only go heavier from that setting. If your decal has come off your Gracoil and you don't know which way to turn it (a common occurance) turn the tension barrel clockwise until it stops (the lightest setting) then turn it counterclockwise 4 turns towards the heaviest setting. Start there and go only tighter from that point.Hopefully, that will help.
Good luck.Greg Hissem.
